I have been on a personal and professional path to wellness since 1998. My journey began when I was living in Boulder, Colorado in 1998. I was truly enjoying the mountain life but I soon realized that I was having trouble breathing and my ability to hike had become severely diminished due to my cigarette smoking habit. One beautiful sunny day on a moderate hiking trail, I began wheezing and coughing, having trouble breathing. It was there and then that I made a commitment to myself to stop smoking. Three months later I had given up cigarettes for good. Six months later after the nicotine and cravings subsided I felt much better. I have since come to realize that day on the mountain trail I became inspired to change my way of life.
I started looking within myself to determine what other lifestyle changes I should make. In 2000 I became a lacto-ovo vegetarian. I lived as a lacto-ovo vegetarian for many years. In 2001 I moved to Maine. After living in that cold and dark climate for a couple of years I noticed that my vegetarian diet was doing more harm than good to my body. I began slowly integrating local organic buffalo meat and local organic chicken into my diet and to my surprise I saw very positive results. I also began an organic vegetable garden and lived a sustainable lifestyle that included a lot of manual labor. This proved to have a positive effect on my body and mind.
Moving to Asheville in 2006 proved to be the greatest change in my path towards wellness. In Asheville I was able to maintain an organic vegetable garden and work through the 3 levels of Reiki training. In 2009 I earned my Reiki Master certification and have continued to help the local community by providing Reiki healing. I also began an exercise routine combining cardio, Yoga, and Pilates. In 2008 I began working in an environment that was toxic to my wellbeing. The effects of that job were weight gain and mild depression. In May of 2009 I began working with a Holistic Health Coach that was a graduate from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition and my life changed again. During the 6 month program I lost 30 pounds, saw an increase in my energy and a decrease in my depression. I learned to make healthier food choices and forgive myself for the not-so-healthy ones.
My personal success has spurred me into action. Since I saw such a major improvement in my overall quality of life, I decided that I wanted to be able to help others awaken the wellness within.
I received my training to practice Health Coaching at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, which is the only nutrition school integrating all the different dietary theories-combining the knowledge of traditional philosophies with modern concepts like the USDA food pyramid, the glycemic index, the Zone and raw foods. I was certified as a Holistic Health Coach in June of 2010 and I am also a member of the American Association of Drugless Practioners.
